Giveaway #5: "A Quarter of Kindness" - $10 Wal-Mart Gift Cards - 5 Winners
I know it's an unusual title, but you'll see why. Now this is a different kind of giveaway. Yes, if you win you'll get a $10 Wal-Mart Gift Card *but* you have to use it to "Give Back." Here's my inspiration...
I had to go to Aldi yesterday to get groceries. It was 44 degrees with a cold Chicago Wind, making it feel 30! I had both kids with me and we went to get a cart. Now if you haven't been to Aldi, they make you pay a quarter for one, but you get it back when you return it. There was a sweet older woman struggling to figure out how to get her quarter back. Then she saw us, pulled out the cart and pushed it towards me. I held out my quarter and she said, "No...Merry Christmas," and with the biggest grin, walked to where a car pulled up to get her.
I was touched. It was the simplest act of kindness. A smile. A quarter. But it meant sooo much to me. And I found it ironic, as well, since I had just blogged the day before about simply giving back with a smile!
Well, I'm keeping that quarter as a reminder to always offer kindness to others. *But* I want to help others give that warm and fuzzy feeling to someone, too. I know some of you have limited budgets and would love to give back to those in need--it could even be a friend that's down on their luck and could use something to smile about.
So I'm offering a "Quarter of Kindess" to five winners in the form of a $10 Wal-Mart Gift Card. I sure do wish it could be more but, well, it's what I have to give. These are coming straight from me and not a sponsor. Now if you enter this giveaway, you are promising not to use it for yourself, but to "do good" by "giving back" and helping someone else. Use it how you wish. Bake cookies, Give Flowers, Buy Food for the Needy, Get a Toy for a Child...whatever it is that your heart tells you to do. And if it's not sold at Wal-Mart, use the card for your own needs and free up $10 cash to make it happen.
And to that kind Woman at Aldi...Thank You for sharing the Spirit of Giving Unto Others.
HERE'S HOW TO ENTER
1) Leave a comment telling me what you might do for someone else with $10? Be sure to leave your first name & email/blog address.
After that, here are other ways to enter: (Please, make sure that you submit extra comments if you do these.)
2) Either subscribe to my email newsletter or become a follower. (If you are already, thank you and you get that 2nd entry)
3) Become a Fan of Coupon Geek on Facebook. (If you are already, thank you and you get that 3rd entry)
4) Blog/Tweet about the giveaway.
There are now a total of 4 entries per person! (Please be sure to leave separate entries for each one.)
Entry is open to US residents only through 11:59pm CST on Monday, December 7th, 2009. Winners will be chosen using random.org and contacted by email. If you're the winner, you'll have 48 hours to respond or an alternate will be chosen.
Good luck to all of you who enter!

ReplyDeleteI have always given the buggy to someone else and for some reason, it just makes their day, especially if they are elderly!
It's amazing how something as small as a quarter just makes all the difference in someone's day. :)

This would be a great way to give back to the school my children go to,they have parrot pass drawing on a bi-weekly basis. The kids earn parrot passes for all different thing they do at school each day.And they fill them out to enter in the drawings. And when they win a parrot pass drawing they could win a board game, gift cards, flash cards, books or what ever they have to offer for a prizes for that week. I would donate this to th school for a prize.
ReplyDeleteI just received a call for a $10.00 donation for soldiers wounded at war.I told them to send the info in the mail and I would donate.I would double this donation with $10.00 more.I'm sure they too need help especially this Christmas season.

What a great story. I am torn on what I would do. A woman I worked with suddenly passed away on Thanksgiving evening and our work is giving 1/2 of what we were collecting for a needy family for the Holidays to her family as she left behind a 16year old and a 19year old. I would give it to her family to just help out where needed. It is tough enough for them to deal with the loss of their mother but if they have to worry about finances too.
ReplyDeleteOr I would give it to my Son's school which is a school for kids with Autism and it is a public school so everything they need usually comes out of teachers pockets and in our State our Teachers had to take a 2.5% salary cut. So if I find out the family would not appreciate the gift then I would give it to a teacher at the school to buy some supplies for her class.

I would love to get something for my teacher assistant for Christmas with my $10!
ReplyDeleteIf I were to win the gift card, I would give it to my school. I am a teacher and we have TONS of families that have fallen upon hardships. We have an Angel Tree but there are always gifts that don't get donated. I would use it to buy something for the the students families in need.
ReplyDeleteI would buy a toy and put in toy for tots box in our library.
ReplyDeleteHi Jaycie! I love it when we experience those little blessings, but they impact us in such a big way!
ReplyDeleteI am torn, trying to decide how I would spend the $10. Would I use it to buy a gift for a needy child whose name is on a bell of the Caring Tree at our church? OR, My middle school daughter is participating in a service project for hospitalized chronically-ill children, and she will help fill shoe boxes with toys for those children- I could buy a couple items to brighten the day of two or more children. Or, I could have each of my kids pick out toothbrushes to donate to the local youth emergency shelter, along with personalized hand-written cards to go with each of those toothbrushes. I suppose if I win, I'll let my kids decide where they would like to see the money go.

If I won I would use it to buy toiletries for families staying at the Ronald McDonald house I've heard they are in need of these. It is the simple things that remind us to be kind to one another: A man in front of me in line at the stamp machine handed me a stamp. It made my day! I passed it on.

This is kinda stupid by here intown there is an older man who is homeless. he doesn't beg he just waits for people to help him. My dh and i saw him in iHOP one night and we bought him supper. At my church in New Orleans, we have a program called "Fuel the Future." It is where we donate individually wrapped, nutritious food items and pack them in backpacks to give to under-nourished elementary children at a local public school to take home on the weekends so that they will not be hungry. I would use the Wal-Mart gift card to purchase items for this wonderful program. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI would probably go to Walmart and buy a few small gifts (using coupons ofcorse to get them super cheap). One would be a bag of Lindor truffels for my husband - he LOVES these and they are not often free (with sales and coupons etc) and that is they only time we have luxuaries (when I can get them free) He is a full time studnet but also workign 20 hrs a week (the max allowed on our international studnet visas) to keep my in school and I would love ot be able to spoil him in this manner. The other gits (probably 4 $2 gifts) I would give to needy people I know(like the 2 people I know who recently lost thier spouses), plus one to the greeter at Walmart just to briten their day!

ReplyDeleteMy family and I have adopted a family in California to send gifts to this Christmas. They are an amazing family. The mother and father have three biological children - two seven year olds (twins) and a four year old. Recently, they decided to adopt two little girls who'd been taken from their family who were in a cult. Their parents fled and gave up their rights to their children. So, this family adopted them and they arrived right before the holidays. So far, we have family games, family movies, little things for each child. We hope to send them in time for Christmas. We have maxed out our budget for the family, but I would really love to get the parents something - an adult movie, a photo album, a bottle of wine... or even simply send them the gift card. You never know when you'll need a few gallons of milk or some chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallows for a good family night :) I would definitely use this gift card in order to make this shipment of holiday cheer just *that* much better.

I often help at low income complex for senior citizens that my mom lives at. When I share coupons, rebates, and extras when I have them. I even take my magazines there after I've read them so they have current things to read. Even a little goes a long ways there because most of them have very little and appreciate everything so much!! Merry christmas to all! Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteIf I won the $10 gc to Walmart, I would give it to my best friend. She had a water leak at her house and even after having a plumber "supposedly" fix the leak, she ended up having a $700 water bill the first month and will have a large one next month. I feel horrible that she is having to deal with this at this time of year and if I win, I will give it to her to put towards her and her kids' Christmas.

Our family will use it to buy our neighbor a coffee pot. She is 78, lost her husband in februrary and her only son a few years before and she is terribly lonely. I try to visit her at least once a week and she always fixes us coffee out of an old unit with a pot she got from a garage sale (that doesn't fit) to replace the original one that broke! Its just sad everytime i see it but I don't want her to feel like a pity case, however, if I won this card I would tell her the story on how i am "paying it forward" and I think she would think it was thoughtful on both your and my part.... in return making her feel loved and then fufilling the meaning of this giveaway!

My kids have a holiday drive at school called Socks, Mittens, & Meds. It's to buy essentials for kids of struggling families. All the Toys and Food baskets are wonderful but this program fills the need for other "essentials " that get overlooked like, Gloves, hats, mittens, socks, undies and monetary donations to help pay for prescription meds such as antibiotics or asthma inhalers that some families may not be able to afford during these difficult times. I would use it for that.
ReplyDeleteI would donate toys and health and beauty aids to a local women's and children's shelter that I used to volunteer at.

ReplyDeleteI would make up as many Christmas "goodie" plates as I possibly could and send them around the neighbhorhood.
ReplyDeleteThis is so ironic because me and my husband were talking last night about getting a gift for some friends of ours that are always helping us out. We don't exchange gifts with them, but we wanted to secretly send them a gift card as our thanks for always being there for us.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we always take 3 tags off our tree at church...1 tag for each of our kids...so I could also put it towards one of those as another possibility. Our church does gifts for both needly families and the residents at our local nursing home.
So I could think of a lot of ways to give back because I believe it is an important lesson for my children to remember each Christmas season.
Thanks for the chance!!
i would give to a local church that makes up holiday baskets for area families

I will use the money to help the family we adopt for Christmas.

I would use this towards my church Missions Outreach program. We have several programs that we help those in need during the year. I'm very partial to the Exodus House where we help families who have lost their homes due to unforeseen events.

I would love a $10.00 gift card to Walmart to purchase items that my children could help me make to brighten the holiday for some elderly folks in the nursing home. Crafts to brighten their rooms and delivery with a smile, and love put into each gift by a child who made it :0)

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I just got done making a list of how we are going to give this Christmas season. For every person that we're buying a gift for, we're going to give to somebody else...whether it's to the food bank, the Christmas shoe box we did, a homeless person a meal, volunteer somewhere, send an anonymous amount of money to a coworker who I know needs it, give a toiletry basket to somebody who lost their job, etc. We have so many ideas that this gift card would REALLY help out with! Thanks for doing this, and encouraging the spirit of giving! =)

My best friend's husband left her nearly a year ago. It has been messy. So, since all her money from her new job goes to keep a roof over her and her youngest two's heads, a car and food, and things the boys need, I would use the ten dollars for something for her. She hasn't been able to do anything for herself in a very long time, and I would love to see the smile on her face.

Thanks so much very generous of you.
My gift seems a little strange at first, but I'll give as quick an explanation as I can. I would give the $10 gift certificate to my mom. Here's why...the quick version. A few years back, my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and declined quickly. He remembers us only some of the time and does not remember my mom is his wife. Anyway, she is paying for his care out of pocket on a teacher's salary. As a pastor, he moved around a lot and did not have a retirement egg to fall back on. She is still struggling to get him on disability and has been sent in circles. She is working on trying to sell the house, etc. because, as you can imagine, it's difficult to pay all those bills on a single salary. So, I think this would help to get her a few necessities or even wants that she passes on to save money to care for my dad.

ReplyDeleteIf I win the "Quarter of Kindness" prize I would send it to a family in need. I belong to a site called cafemom.com and was told about a member there who has four children and no money for Christmas...I'd send the card to her.

I recently met this family through Craigslist when we were selling some of our baby stuff. Four months ago they had been blessed with triplets after losing two other children to a misscarriage and a stillbirth. They weren't expecting to have three baby boys and aren't finacially able to afford everything you need with triplets (who could?). We ended up giving them not only the bouncer they wanted to buy but also some clothes, toys, bottles and other things they could use for the boys. I know it wouldn't be much but I would give them the gift card. My family by no means has a lot of money but we help out when we can and this would be an easy way to give them some holiday cheer!

I would use my coupons as to make the $10 go farther and purchase food for the food bank. My kids have been saving non perishable food for weeks now so this would be a great addition. I would match the $10 if I won.
