Homemade Baby Food?
So, I know I have 6 months before I would have to start making any but I wanted to get my research done now BEFORE the baby's born.
I know there are a lot of frugal mommies that stop by the blog and I need your help. Did any of you make homemade baby food for your little ones? I'd love to know the advantages/disadvantages and whether or not you truly felt it was worth the extra effort.
Also, are there any books you would recommend and what types of items am I going to need to make the food? (Foodmill, trays?, etc,)
Have you seen any good articles on any other (or your!) blog?
Please leave your advice in the comments field. If you don't feel comfortable leaving a comment, you can email me at coupongeek@live.com
Thank you for your help!
Jaycie

While I'm here :)... I bought a food mill with my first...and it collected dust very quickly. I learned that it was MUCH easier to use the blender. I froze the food in the little 1/2c. size throw away containers (that I cannot bring myself to throw away) that you buy in the container isle at the store..now we use them for snack cups.
ReplyDeleteWith #2 I have barely made any food...and I certainly haven't frozen any...I'm much more laid back about it...and I'm using Earth's Best...you can buy it pretty cheaply by the flat at Diapers.com... and you can mail in your man. Qs and they will store them online and let you use them...pretty sweet deal.
Jaycie,
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time visiting your blog, but I do make baby food for our daughter. I nursed exclusively for 6 months, so didn't worry about it then, and then my husband bought me the Kidco Electric food chopper and I LOVE IT!!!! It works SO well and I basically take our left over food and chop it up, freeze it in ice cube trays and then pop them into freezer baggies and label for later. I would change absolutely nothing!!! The only thing I wonder about....Kidco also makes a separate freezer tray and microwave dish so that you freeze the food in a certain shape, then it just pops into the microwave tray for easy microwaving. I mean, it sounds nice, but it wasn't *necessary*. Our daughter, Phoebe, eats virtually everything we eat: stew, tacos (very mild!), veggies, lasagna, etc. Pretty much anything that I have left over and don't think we'll eat the next day for lunch, I pop into the food mill and chop it up and freeze it!
Hope this helps!
Mary
I bought the Fresh Baby food making kit from Walmart.com for around $24. It was the best investment I ever got. I will tell you how to make whatever you are interested in knowing. All you need is your fresh fruits and veges, a food processor (I used my magic bullet worked wonderfully), microwave or some other way to steam with minimal water, and ice cube trays. This was so simple. I made weeks worth of food in 30 min a week. It was wonderful. Plus you know what you are giving your baby because YOU made it. Let me know if you have any questions I would love to help. I was new to being a mom and wanted to do something special and it really made me feel like I was doing something wonderful for my baby. Hi Jaycie, making your own baby food is just soooo easy and when you make your own food you're not contributing to the land fills! I recommend getting the ice cube trays with the covers for easy freezing. http://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Baby-Easy-Breast-Trays/dp/B0007CS4EU and I used the Super Baby Food book for ideas, but basically you steam some veggies or fruit, throw them in a food processor then freeze them (if you need to). After you slowly introduce your baby to new foods you can start mashing up whatever you're having for dinner. It's so easy!! I see no reason to buy jars of food at all. Stella never had jarred food and I was working full time. I will do the same if we have another baby.
