Food Preservation Sites

Ever since I froze up some blueberries this summer, I've been trying to find other foods that freeze well--especially produce! These are the things that I seem to HAVE to go to the store for each week. I have it on my list to educate myself on some food preservation tips so I can put together a great garden this spring!

In the All You Magazine blog, I found this article with a couple of recommended websites for Food Preservation:

Oregon State University

PreserveFood.com

I've also had luck with pickyourown.org.

Have any of you come across any other sites or blogs that have good detailing on any type of food preservation? Please share! :) Have you had any success with freezing/canning etc.? Leave a link to your blog for us to check out your posting!

From what I've done so far, I've found that even freezing up a few things can really help out the grocery budget!

  1. I haven't blogged any of this...but I am LOVING the Ball Blue Book of Canning. Yes, I know...and actual paper and ink BOOK..but still helpful none the less.

Have you ever tried to freeze apples? I have a bizzillion and need to get them done up ASAP. Guess I could dehydrate and rehydrate later...

  2. I do lots of canning, and highly recommend the Ball Blue Book to beginners. It has all of the current techniques. You might spend $15 on it (maybe less this time of year, as canning season wanes down), but the information inside is invaluable, and you might end up sticking some pages together as you cook. Librarians don't like that. :) Ball has a website, too, freshpreserving.com, where they share lots of recipes and tips. (The book, however, is less annoying and loads faster).

  3. My favorite site is GardenWeb.com. They have a forum called "Harvest" that is filled with recipes and advice. The people are super friendly, and the recipes are usually well tested.

I've put up zuchini, pickles, and tomatoes using their advice.
