Ask the Readers: Helping Toddlers Talk

Nathan has been doing very well with talking lately. It's amazing how far he has come in the last few months. I've been focusing on reading lots of books to him and on trying to tell him the name of anything we come across. The biggest help so far has been Baby Babble - Speech-Enhancing DVD for Babies and Toddlers. It's a great DVD that also has a Parent Tutorial at the end with some ideas on how to help speech improve.

But to me, the best tools and advice are those tried and true methods of fellow Mommies. So I'm asking you, the readers, what were your best findings when your child was expanding his language speaking skills? Were there any books, dvds, games, activities, etc that seemed to help more?

  1. My son loved and still loves baby signs. He was repeating the words and signing at 1 1/2.

  2. With Daniel (almost 3) I was always amazed at how his vocabulary would expand just by him being in a new environment. He moved to a new room in daycare - BOOM - new words/phrases. He'd take a class with new kids - BOOM - new words/phrases. At least with us, each time we would shift his schedule a bit, he'd pick up new things.
