Ask The Readers: This and That

So I've had a few questions that I wanted to throw out to all of you and I figured...I'll just do them in one posting. I need your expert advice on these things.

1) I'm wanting to switch our food storage containers over to totally clear containers. All the same type so I'm not messing with hundreds of lids. What are your favorite food storage containers that you've had success with? I'm looking for something microwave/dishwasher safe.

2) Since spring is coming up, I'm already thinking of gardening. The past few years, I've only done tomatoes. What have you found to be the biggest money savers to grow in your home gardens?

3) I'm not planning on home-schooling Nathan, but I would like to be sure that I'm on the right track with him for pre-school, kindergarten, etc. Where do you find the best home-schooling materials? Any websites/store/books you recommend?

Thanks for any help on these topics!

  1. I love to garden and so do my kids. My favorites and biggest moneysavers are all my herbs, broccoli, green beans, and sugar snap peas. All are very easy to grow from seed but I usually buy a six pack of broccoli plants to get a head start. Check with your County Extention service to find the best variaties of veggies for your area. Nothing like fresh peasto and buying that much basil would be a fortune! Have fun.

  2. Hi! Love your blog BTW!! I just wanted to say that as much as I loved my clear storage containers like the ones you show in the pic above.... They were not worth the money I paid for them. Not sure if you were just showing a pic of some containers, or you are interested in those in particular? Yes they are great for venting, and you can see in them, and some of the lids are universal but.... the vent system falls apart easily. Some came apart in the dishwasher and some came apart when I was "venting". They went in the garbage. I couldnt have little pieces around with having a toddler who loves to play with containers. Just wanted to give a heads up. Maybe others have some opinions on them as well? I think I bought mine at Costco. Normally I write companies, but for some reason with these I just said forget it. *shrug*

  3. Starfall.com is a great website for preschool and kindergarden age kids to learn letters and such. I grow tomatoes and herbs the most but peppers are also easy to grow.

  4. First off, I love your blog. I think you do a great job!

I love the Lock and Lock containers. The ones I have are cylindrical and come in several sizes.

As for gardens, we had our first last year. We had great success with tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, green beans, green peppers and basil. The peas and green beans I plant seeds in the ground. We had so many green beans that I was able to can a bunch. We even made homemade tomato sauce with fresh tomatoes, basil, and green pepper from the garden and some store-bought onions. We just had to make sure we had a fence up to keep all the rabbits out.

  5. jaycie, some of my favorite things to plant are herbs. they're cheap and grow pretty easily. i grow basil, thyme, rosemary and sage every year. these are all great things that go on chicken breasts! i like green peppers, but my plant doesn't get very big before the rabbits eat it down to the nub, they really like that one! lol.

  6. If you have the space, then squash, onions, lettuce, and radishes are some great choices. I've always had great success with all of those. Of course, tomatoes are always my favorites. Great blog, by the way!

  7. I've loved these:

I got them for a bridal gift and they are all I use. I love that the containers rest on their lids. It save so much space and makes them difficult to lose. Also, there are few lid sizes, so you don't have to search around looking for just the right size for a container. They are a tiny bit more but so worth it. They don't stain and hold up in the freezer and microwave (esp the lids :) great.
