I happened to record the show Doctors the other day because my favorite fitness expert, Denise Austin, was on the show. During the episode, they said that there are around 300 deaths to little children a year, due to treadmills. They highly recommended that all parents unplug the treadmill when not in use.
Here's an older article on treadmill injuries, too.
If you have a treadmill at home, please be extra cautious if you have little children at home.

I bought a treadmill several years ago. The same day I bought it my 3 year old decided to show a friend how it worked. He turned it on and fell. He took a lot of skin off of his back and side. That taught me immediately to always keep it unplugged.
